Scores of new members for the Liberal Democrats in Blackburn ahead of General Election

The Liberal Democrats in Blackburn have seen a surge in new members over the past two weeks, with membership up since the general election was called.

It comes as the Liberal Democrats reach their highest ever membership nationally, with over 101,768 members.

14,000 new members across the country have joined the Liberal Democrats in the two weeks since the General Election was announced and over 50,000 members have joined since last year’s EU referendum,

Liberal Democrat candidate for Blackburn, Irfan Ahmed said:

“More and more people in East Lancashire are joining the Liberal Democrats, the only political party that is standing up to Theresa May’s plans to divide Britain.

“We are going into these elections bigger than ever before, with a clear message and a growing sense of momentum.

“Communities here deserve representatives who will fight against cuts to our schools, NHS and social care services.

“In local councils just as in Westminster, Liberal Democrats will provide the strong opposition that Britain needs.”

We will end rough sleeping says Lib Dem candidate Irfan Ahmed

The Liberal Democrats have become the first major party to commit to ending the “national scandal” of rough sleeping across Britain, including in Lancashire.

The Liberal Democrats have set out a series of measures to end rough sleeping, including introducing a Housing First provider in each local authority that would put long-term homeless people straight into independent homes rather than emergency shelters.

The news comes as a coalition of homelessness charities, including Centrepoint, Crisis, Homeless Link, Shelter and St Mungo’s, have called on political parties to commit to end rough sleeping in Britain.

Liberal Democrat candidate, Irfan Ahmed said:

“It is a national scandal that so people are sleeping on the streets in 21st century Britain.

“By increasing support for homelessness prevention and properly funding emergency accommodation, we can end rough sleeping in Lancashire and across the country.

“We will ensure our local authority has at least one provider of Housing First services, to allow long-term homeless people to live independently in their own homes.

“The evidence suggests that supporting people and giving them long-term, stable places to stay is far more successful in tackling homelessness than constantly moving them to different temporary accommodation.

“Under this government, homelessness has soared and young people have been stripped of housing benefit, threatening to make matters even worse.

“This election is a chance to change the direction of this country and stand up for a Britain that is open, tolerant and united.”

Dozens of young people in Blackburn to be stripped of housing benefit

Dozens of young people in Blackburn will be affected by the Conservative government’s decision to strip 18-21 year olds of housing benefit, research by the House of Commons library commissioned by the Liberal Democrats has shown.

In total 18,000 young people across the country are expected to be affected. The Liberal Democrats have committed to reverse the cuts, which came into force at the beginning of this month.

Charities have warned that stripping 18-21 year-olds of housing benefits could push more young people onto the streets while research has shown it is likely to cost taxpayers more than it saves.

Liberal Democrat spokesperson, Irfan Ahmed commented:

“The heartless decision to strip under-21s of housing benefit risks pushing more young people in Blackburn onto the streets.

“Vulnerable youngsters with nowhere else to turn are being abandoned by this Conservative government. This nasty and counterproductive policy should be overturned immediately.

“Younger generations have the most to lose from the increasingly divisive policies and hard Brexit agenda being pursued by this Conservative government.

“This election is a chance to change the direction of our country. The Liberal Democrats will restore housing benefit for 18-21 year olds and prevent a destructive hard Brexit robbing young people of their futures.”

Liberal Democrats: This is a chance for voters in Blackburn to change direction of the country

Voters in Blackburn should vote for the Liberal Democrats to change the direction of the country and ensure Britain has a decent opposition, the party’s local candidate has said today.

The Prime Minister today has called a snap General Election to be held on the 8th June.

Liberal Democrat candidate in Blackburn, Irfan Ahmed commented:

“This election is a huge opportunity for voters in Blackburn to change the direction of our country and ensure Britain has a decent opposition.

“People in Blackburn may have voted to leave the EU, but many did not vote for the extreme form of Brexit that Theresa May has imposed on us after being backed by Labour.

“For all those who want to protect our local economy by staying in the Single Market and ensure the people have the final say over what comes next, this is your chance.

“The Liberal Democrats are the real opposition to the Conservative Brexit Government and the only party fighting for a Britain that is open, tolerant and united.”
